Last Saturday, I went to the SoMa StrEats Food Park, in San Francisco, to shoot photos for my next article with Roaming Hunger. Little did I know, it was National Corn Dog Day and FunCheap SF was there hosting a huge event. There were 12 food trucks in attendance, doing their own take on the infamous Corn Dog. Around 3pm, tables were moved and lines were starting to form, for what turned into a Corn Dog Eating Contest! Perfect timing! I grabbed my camera and literally got up to the front row and started shooting photos. As they were getting ready to announce the contestants, I could already hear the crowd of people placing bets on their predictions. The final contestant they announced, turned out to be a 12 time food eating contest winner in various states, across the country. The crowd went wild for her!! The rest of them came from all around the Bay Area just to partake in this crazy contest.
Each participant was given 3 corn dogs and a big glass of water. As the contest began, I couldn't help but laugh my ass off while snapping away. I just thought it was hilarious that my friends and I happen to be at the right place; at the right time. However, I must admit that I almost hurled a few times, watching these people inhale these corn dogs. They were each so determined. Especially Sergio, who ended up being the crowned winner of the contest. He stood tall, like a true soldier, as he smashed on corn dogs while chugging them down with tons of water. I swear that was his secret! He finished all 3 corn dogs before any of them were even done with their second! Sergio was handed a gold crown, along with 50 bucks and a harness full of PBR's.
A fun time was had for sure and I'm glad I was able to unexpectedly capture some historic moments of this annual event. I've already marked my calendar for 2016's Corn Dog Day!
